Generating & Storing Energy
Power Generation
We all about two things when it comes to energy generation one is to help small businesses in the local area deliver the products to us, and the second one is to help all of us been formed to make good decisions when considering this topic.
The National Grid uses a considerable number of different methods of generating electricity. this is by nuclear, fossil fuels, hydro and now an increasing number of renewable sources. Renewables includes solar, wind, geothermal and hydrogen.
This is not the place are we enter a political debate about what is best for the planet, mankind and our future is there are many other websites you can find on the internet that will help you with this. Kinder Living is more about providing information that individual homeowners can access to provide information to help make decisions about our energy use at home. one example of this is when the oil fired boiler requires replacement, what do we put in, in its place and helping with the decision of considering a renewable energy source.
The increasing use of technology in the home has opened many opportunities for the homeowner to consider alternative Energy supply. when a major component requires replacement the boiler for example this is often a good opportunity to not only consider the boiler but also energy use in home overall. Heating the home with electricity is the most expensive method and often least effective there’s a lot of energy used to achieve good comfort levels. We would normally consider oil or gas as our energy source for heating, it might be possible to consider other renewable sources for a heating but getting the correct information is often difficult forcing us to continue to take short-term solutions.
Renewable energy in home is most likely be solar as we all have some available roof space, it is a myth that solar is inefficient in the UK due to lack of sunlight but this is not the case and the National Grid has indeed installed many solar farms across the UK. It is therefore not unreasonable to expect us to use the real estate over roofs to increase this method of generating energy and in many cases benefit from lower bills and feed-in tariffs.
when considering renewable energy sources for the home biomass has become a popular method to consider. you probably would not consider this as a solution in a three-bedroom semi-detached home but if you live in a 5 bed detached home with some grounds you may have enough space to consider this option.
Where Do We Fit In?

Most of us do not have money to burn, but in a lot of cases that’s exactly what we’re doing. One of our taglines is ” kind to your pocket” so when we are considering a major purchase such as a boiler a new central heating system it is still less expensive to just continue with gas or oil as we’ve done before. making informed choices is what we are discussing hear, knowing the long-term cost of gas and oil and the possible savings by using a renewable product might be very interesting.

Double Glazing?
Most of us do not have money to burn, but in a lot of cases that’s exactly what we’re doing. One of our taglines is ” kind to your pocket” so when we are considering a major purchase such as a boiler a new central heating system it is still less expensive to just continue with gas or oil as we’ve done before. making informed choices is what we are discussing hear, knowing the long-term cost of gas and oil and the possible savings by using a renewable product might be very interesting. Many homeowners invested heavily double glazing often replacing perfectly good windows. It good sense replace old and rotten windows but from energy saving financial point of view the deal is not as good as it looks. the maximum heat energy saved by double glazing is about 10% this means in some cases it might take between 50 and 200 years to get a return
on that investment. life expectancy of double glazing is between 20 and 25 years so a lot of cases there is never going to be a return, but it’s a big business!
The windows are old rotten and drafty it makes good sense replace them, deciding what with it’s the question, do we call the nearest UPVC company, or a bespoke window manufacturer and make them from wood. The latter choice will probably provide windows that last considerably longer.
Changing the windows might be more about fashion, and making the property look nice rather than good finance. Changing the heating system ans spending time on deciding what to do is far less appealing, so temptation is to just get it done without much thought.
Technology and Energy
The increasing use of technology in the home has opened many opportunities for the homeowner to consider alternative energy supply. when a major component requires replacement the boiler for example this is often a good opportunity to not only consider the boiler but also energy use in home overall. Renewable Energy Sources
Solar
You might be surprised to know that there are over twenty-five types of energy from renewable sources. Within solar energy alone there are ten different methods, some of these simply collect the heat from the sun and convert this directly into heat energy, while others convert light into electricity. Some of these solutions lend themselves to the DIY-er, and offer homemade projects at minimal upfront cost, just some time an effort. It would however give the satisfaction of a great achievement with long term benefits in reduced bills and reduced consumption of other resources.
Biomass become a popular method to consider if you have the space and would not consider this as a solution in a three-bedroom semi-detached home. If you own a large detached home with some grounds you may have enough space to consider this option. There is a lot to consider as the system used could take three to four times the space the gas or oil system. Storage of the pellets or wood chips also take a lot more space than the gas or oil tank. It also must be a watertight store as damp fuel will reduce the efficiency of the biomass boiler.
Early Adopters
We have to thank the ‘early adopters’ someone purchased the first car, even if someone had to walk in front. Someone flew in the first aeroplane even if it was less than one hundred meters. Someone install electricity in their house to replace the gas lighting.
Someone purchased the first Personal Computer even if it cost them £5000 and someone purchased the first mobile phone even if it was the size of two house bricks and cost £3500 to purchase and £300pcm to own. It is the same in adopting renewable technology, someone needs to be first, even if it is still in development and expansive.
Storing Energy
The most important thing to remember is that Alternating Current (AC) electricity cannot be stored. the National Grid has over the years developed algorithms to predict the amount of electricity is needed any given time. This is why we often hear about power surges during the commercial break on TV because we all switch the kettle on. The most common example of storing electricity is in the car where a 12 volt Direct Current (DC) battery stores electricity the starting it. The first company the used batteries on grand scale was the GPO who eventually became BT. The entire telephone system running a DC power supply. This is why your telephone still works during a power cut. This technology was on a grand scale and why telephone exchanges were such big building. The batteries were several metres in size with very large cooper buzz-bar used to distribute the low voltage but high current required to meet the system demand.
Over the last ten years and certainly last five battery technology has come on at extraordinary rate. The electric car has suddenly made it into the main stream. Billions has been spent on continually developing the car to go further on a charge. Changing the perception too, has been key in weeing the “petrol head” away from the internal combustion engine and considering an electric car. This has largely been done by the fact that an electric motor is the most efficient form of delivering energy to provide motion. The moment you provide the energy source it is instantly running., hence o-60 in 3.2 seconds.
The same battery use the electric car is now available to install in the home. You can then use the solar panels to keep it changed up during the daytime and use “econmy7” at night at the cheaper tariffs during the night. You can then use this cheaper electricity during the day stored in your battery when electricity from the grid is more expensive.
This use of energy multiplied over the country will lead to much less demand for the National Grid to supply the energy particularly due to the fact that using batteries in the home in this way will even out supply and demand but also as any excess produced in the home will be going back into the grid.
